WATCH: Operation Shanela: Police boost presence in Alberton to combat rising crime

Operation Shanela brought a multi-agency police presence to Alberton to target serious crimes and ensure safety.

A visible multi-agency police operation, part of Operation Shanela, took place in Alberton on December 11.

It aimed to tackle crime and ensure the safety of residents and shoppers during the festive season.

Vosloorus station commander Brigadier Ntombizini Thethe and Germiston Station Commander Brigadier Nonhlanhla Shezi led the operation under the authority of Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole.

Thethe provided updates on the progress, “We are in the Alberton area to support the local station commander in addressing their challenges. The primary focus is on robberies, carjackings and housebreakings, which have increased in recent months.”

The operation’s first phase on December 10 yielded these results across the district:

• 242 arrests, including 179 for contact crimes, 14 for contact-related crimes, and 34 for other serious crimes;
• 56 for GBV.

The operation was part of ongoing efforts to address GBV, a national priority, and was pursued year-round.

The second phase on December 11 included roadblocks, spaza shop inspections, and vehicle and truck compliance monitoring.

Officers arrested 21 illegal immigrants, issued 24 traffic fines valued at R9 100, seized a firearm, and arrested two for dealing in drugs.

Officers, present throughout the day, ensured residents and people in areas like the Newmarket Mall could safely carry out their activities.

“We appreciate the community’s co-operation with our awareness campaigns, especially during the festive season, which is often targeted by criminals.

“An incident was recently reported of a group of people who had money stolen while travelling together. Our aim is to prevent such crimes and ensure a safe environment for everyone,” added Thethe.

Motorists and shoppers can expect increased police activity along key routes in Alberton and should exercise patience.
