Freddie Vermeulen murder case: Accused remains in custody after remote hearing

IT businessman Freddie Vermeulen remains in custody as the State updates its investigation into his wife’s murder, with the next court date set for April 24 .

The Randhart murder case of IT businessman Freddie Vermeulen saw a remote court hearing on March 26, as the State provided updates on its investigation and the accused outlined his plans for legal representation.

Freddie, who remains in custody following his refusal of bail on January 30, is charged with the murder of his wife, Juanita Vermeulen, who was found with multiple stab wounds in the boot of her car at a shopping centre in Brackenhurst on January 9.

His next court appearance is scheduled for 24 April.

Accused’s defence and testimony

During previous proceedings, Freddie testified that the fatal incident was not premeditated.

He claimed that a confrontation with his wife escalated when she allegedly attacked him with a knife, forcing him to defend himself.

He further disclosed that their relationship had deteriorated over recent months and admitted to an extramarital affair.

Freddie also alleged that Juanita had been secretly recording their interactions and had been pressing him over life insurance and assets worth approximately R11 million.

He testified that, following the stabbing, he attempted to take her to hospital but stopped at a location with rental trailers, seeking assistance to get her to Netcare.

Bail denial and State case

The Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court previously refused bail, citing that Freddie’s personal circumstances were insufficiently exceptional to justify release.

The magistrate highlighted inconsistencies in his account, noting that while Freddie claimed to have stabbed Juanita twice, post-mortem reports indicated nine stab wounds.

The State maintains that the killing may have been premeditated and highlighted concerns about Freddie’s mental state, including previous suicidal threats and attempts.

Witnesses are expected to corroborate evidence presented by the State.

Ongoing investigations

Police investigations are continuing, with a post-mortem examination yet to be completed and an identity parade still pending.

The weapon used in the incident has not been disclosed. The investigation intensified after two men discovered Juanita’s body in the boot of her white BMW 3 Series at Bracken Square Shopping Centre in Brackenhurst.

Freddie remains in custody, awaiting the next court hearing on April 24 due to pending post-mortem results.
