Fraud arrest in Alberton over alleged fake immigration documents
EMPD officers arrested a 44-year-old foreign national after Home Affairs investigations allegedly uncovered fraudulent immigration stamps and an expired permit.
A 44-year-old foreign national has been arrested in Alberton for allegedly being in possession of fraudulent immigration documentation.
According to the EMPD, the arrest was carried out by officers attached to the Community Liaison Unit (CLU) during law enforcement duties in the area.
The incident unfolded at the corner of McBride and Babiana streets, where officers stopped and questioned the man before requesting to inspect his documentation.
In a statement, EMPD said officers discovered that the suspect was allegedly residing illegally in the Republic of South Africa after his visitor’s permit reportedly expired on February 14, 2026.
The matter was escalated for further investigation in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
“Further investigations conducted in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs revealed discrepancies with the immigration stamps contained in the suspect’s passport,” EMPD stated.
Preliminary findings showed that the immigration stamps did not match records on the Immigration Movement Control System.
“It is alleged that the suspect entered South Africa in 2024 and never departed the country thereafter, despite passport stamps reflecting movements during 2025 and 2026,” EMPD added.
The suspect was arrested and detained at the Alberton Police Station on charges relating to fraud and contravention of the Immigration Act.
He is expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
The arrest forms part of ongoing law enforcement operations conducted across Alberton and surrounding areas, where authorities continue to focus on compliance with immigration and documentation laws.
