A look back at Hennico’s history

As they start this new chapter, they express gratitude for the unwavering support of the community.

The owners of the newly rebranded Astron Energy Alberton petrol station, formerly known as Freshstop Hennico in Alberton North, are thrilled with the updated look and name, even though the staff and excellent service remain unchanged.

On April 26, Corné and Heinrich Botha introduced their revamped station to the community. Each customer received a small token of appreciation, making it a joyous day to celebrate this milestone.

For Corné, the occasion held special meaning because she dedicated it to her parents, Hennie and Lisa Smit, who initiated the journey.

“It’s always been my goal to continue my father’s legacy,” she said.

The Alberton Record caught up with Corné and Heinrich to delve into the history of their family business and their vision for the future.

A leap of faith

In 1970, Hennie Smit, then the proprietor of Smitty’s Motor Spares in Alberton, seized an opportunity to acquire a petrol station in Alberton North. Partnering with his business partner, Nico, they established Hennico Dienstasie, laying the foundation for a family-run enterprise.

Later, Hennie bought out Nico, and the station became a family business.

Hennie and wife Lisa then managed the petrol station, and in 1998, their daughter, Corné, joined them.

“I remember as a little girl, I always hung out with my father at work, and we always talked about how one day we would run the station together.”

Hennie and Lisa were married for 34 years and had two daughters, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one on the way.

Many Albertonians would remember Hennie because he spent most of his life there and was a well-known businessman then.

Hennie passed away in 1997, and his wife continued the business until 2000, when Corné and Heinrich bought the petrol station from her mother, Lisa.

“My mother decided she wanted to sell and was ready to retire. That was when I thought I wanted to continue my father’s legacy.”

Embracing change, they renovated, transitioning the station into a one-stop destination. Joining the Fresh Stop franchise in 2012 further enhanced its appeal, culminating in the transition to Astron Energy Alberton this year.

A family business

Corné and Heinrich see their staff and community as part of their family.

Throughout the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, they prioritised their staff’s well-being, ensuring no one was laid off and going the extra mile to support them and their families.

Their family-like team of 20 employees plays a crucial role in their success. In 2017, Ria Swanepoel was appointed as the station manager.

“She is such an asset and so unbelievably good at what she does,” said Corné

“People would think it is easy to take over a business, especially a family business, but let me tell you, as soon as you take it over, you need to put every bit of hard work into it. It is hard work and a lot of determination.”

They remain committed to serving the community and supporting local businesses.

“This is the business’ new jacket, and we are also excited to announce that we now have a loyalty programme that rewards clients when supporting us,” said the Bothas.

As they start this new chapter, they are grateful for the community’s support, pledging to continue providing top-notch service and fostering lasting connections.

Hennie Smit will forever be remembered.
