Authors launch Sewe Keer Sondig in Alberton
The authors hope their book will encourage people to read.
Renowned author Stefaans Coetzee launched a new book, Sewe Keer Sondig, with Alberton-based author Amanda de Meillon and 42 other Afrikaans authors, who worked together on the book that comprises 24 short stories.
The launch was at the beautiful Café@Bodmin in New Redruth.
Coetzee is a husband, a father and an author. He spent 19 years in prison, and that’s where he began writing because he always had a desire to write. He published his first book, Wit Wolf, in 2019, which tells the author’s life story.
In the same year, Coetzee published his second book, Suiker Britz: Dossier van ‘n Speurbaas with Anemari Jansen and his third, Onbeskryflike Genade, was published last year.
Coetzee said, “Sewe Keer Sondig is the latest book, and I like challenging people to work together, and this is what the book has done.”
The book features short stories about the seven deadly sins, with two authors per story. The idea of authors working together and encouraging reading and writing among people inspired Sewe Keer Sondig.
Originally from Potchefstroom, De Meillon won her first poetry competition at age seven.
“It was a Simba competition which I will never forget because I won a Simba pen, and it started my writing career. Her book, Gelapte Legkaart, was also a part of the book launch and tells her life story and offers hope to abused women. De Meillon also authored two poetry books, Volsirkel and Seisoene.
The launch was a success, and these authors aim to make people aware of the importance of reading (and reading in Afrikaans) and open doors for other authors to follow suit. People can buy Sewe Keer Sondig at Exclusive Books or Naledi Online.
