@albertonrecord Unending sewage flowing on Dekenah Street, Alrode, has seen local business owners in the area demanding that action be taken. There are concerns that the sewage poses a health risk to workers in the area.
“We have been complaining about this but it has been addressed. I went on leave, hoping that when I came back to work it would have been addressed, but it still hasn’t been addressed. And now with the heat during spring, the smell is only going to get worse,” said a worker who prefers not to be named.
The Alberton Record sent queries to CoE officials (environmental resource, waste management, water and sanitation departments), who are specifically tasked with ensuring that residents and visitors of the city enjoy an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being, included in these queries is Alrode local ward Cllr Samantha Nair.
Response:
CoE official, Mbali Matiwane: “This issue will be urgently investigated and resolved where required.”
Clr Samantha Nair: “If a ticket was logged for the issue, the department would have attended to it. Furthermore, I have gone through all logged calls on my group and I never received any reference numbers for this issue. If it was sent to me, I would have immediately sent it to the manager in water and sanitation.”
