City manager leads Anti-Corruption Day with call to action
On Anti-Corruption Day, Dr Imogen Mashazi urged collective action against corruption, emphasising transparency and accountability in shaping a future of integrity.
On International Anti-Corruption Day, the CoE joined the global effort to combat corruption, rallying under the theme ‘Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity’.
City manager Dr Imogen Mashazi spoke about the critical role of collective action in eradicating corruption and building a future rooted in transparency and accountability.
Mashazi began by acknowledging the widespread nature of corruption and its devastating impact on societies worldwide, describing it as an insidious force that exacerbates social challenges, deepens inequalities and fuels injustice.
“Corruption is a reality that confronts many around the world, creating challenges, tragedies and inequalities, many of which are directly tied to its existence,” she stated.
Acknowledging that the fight against corruption is a shared responsibility, Mashazi urged municipal staff to prevent unethical behaviour in the city’s operations.
She stressed the importance of integrity, urging staff to avoid doing corrupt things and report corruption and misconduct.
“Our commitment to transparency and accountability is vital in shaping a future built on integrity. Each of us has a role in ensuring corruption finds no place in our municipality,” Mashazi asserted.
The observance highlighted the city’s efforts to promote ethical governance and accountability and had a particular focus on inspiring the younger generation to embrace the values of integrity.
Mashazi stressed the need to cultivate a culture of ethical leadership, especially among youth, who will be the stewards of tomorrow’s governance.
She also reminded staff about the municipality’s fraud hotline, urging them to report corruption confidentially.
“See it! Report it!” became a rallying cry, reminding all staff of the importance of vigilance and proactiveness in the fight against corruption.
As part of ongoing efforts, the city remains committed to upholding ethical governance, promoting accountability, and fostering a culture of integrity in its operations.
The observance underscored the city’s determination to confront corruption head-on and build a legacy of honesty and fairness for future generations.
The call to action was clear: Everyone has a role in shaping a future free of corruption, and together, we can create a society built on transparency and integrity.
