Learners lead the way with Miss and Mr Parkland Community Service Initiative

Parklands High School in Alberton launches a dynamic, learner-driven initiative to nurture leadership, community spirit, and practical life skills through the Miss and Mr. Parkland Community Service programme.

Parklands High School in Alberton has unveiled a vibrant new initiative, Miss and Mr Parkland Community Service, designed to empower learners to lead with purpose and make a real difference in their community.

Unlike traditional pageants, this learner-led programme goes far beyond titles. It aims to inspire active citizenship, foster leadership and equip young people with practical life skills.

Through this ongoing programme, learners are embracing the spirit of ubuntu — learning to care, give back and serve their community. They are developing a wide range of real-world skills, including leadership, public speaking, event planning, digital literacy, marketing and fundraising.

Participants also gain hands-on experience in school-based projects, taking on administrative responsibilities and working in teams to make a sustainable impact.

“We don’t want this to be a once-off project,” said Miss Nkabinde, one of the initiative’s coordinators. “Our vision is to make the Miss and Mr Parkland Community Service a continuous, year-to-year programme that grows with each group of learners and deepens its impact across the Alberton community.”

She emphasised that Parklands High is committed to nurturing future-ready learners who are confident, socially conscious and equipped to lead. “This initiative is just one of the ways we’re turning that vision into action,” she added.

With strong support from teachers, parents and the broader community, Parklands High continues to invest in the potential of its learners, fostering a new generation of leaders driven by service and compassion.
