Concerns raised for the well-being of animals kept at the Alberton Dam

The Alberton SPCA confirmed that it is investigating and will provide feedback once the probe is concluded.

Residents who live and frequent the Alberton Dam located on Bloutulp Road in Verwoerdpark have raised concerns about the well-being of animals kept at the municipal-owned facility.

The dam is home to pigs, goats, ducks and other animals. There are claims that some animals are not being adequately fed and others look dehydrated.

“I am an animal lover, and the way these animals are treated there is very upsetting to me. Some of the piggies look hungry every time I see them and they also look dehydrated,” said one resident who spoke to the Alberton Record on condition of anonymity.

The Alberton Record visited the site to assess the condition the animals were living under, but the entrance gate to where these animals were staying was locked.

Another resident who lives near the dam said: “That gate is always locked. Even when the caretaker is on-site. He previously used to allow people to come to feed the animals, but now, we cannot enter to feed them.”

Asked for comment, the Alberton SPCA said: “The Alberton Dam is under investigation. Unfortunately, we cannot provide feedback until this matter has been finalised.”

The Alberton Record sent questions to the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE). At the time of going to print, no update has been received.
