Amcare celebrates 23 years of transformative service to the community

Amcare, a local non-profit dedicated to supporting victims of domestic violence, individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, and the elderly, celebrates its 23rd anniversary with significant milestones, including expanded services and a new, larger second-hand shop.

Amcare, an NPO founded on January 17, 2002, by Alberton Methodist Church and Reverend Neill Robinson, is celebrating 23 years of impactful service to local communities.

The organisation, which provides vital support to victims of domestic violence, individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, and the elderly, marked this significant milestone with reflections on its recent achievements, overcoming challenges, and its enduring commitment to its core mission.

Under the leadership of general manager Marihet Infantino, Amcare has expanded its reach, serving approximately 10 000 individuals each month, with its influence extending well beyond Alberton to areas like Thokoza, Phola Park, Greenfields, and Alberton North.

These regions, along with a recent expansion to Phumula, are now benefitting from Amcare’s comprehensive services, which include victim empowerment, HIV/AIDS support, and elderly care.

Growth amid challenges

Amcare’s 23rd anniversary celebration is marked by impressive milestones.

The organisation has not only broadened the areas it serves but has also placed victim-friendly rooms in local police stations, providing a safe space for victims of violence to receive support.

Additionally, Amcare’s second-hand goods shop has moved to a larger venue, offering greater visibility and enabling the NPO to generate more funds for its programmes.

Marihet said that this shift also plays a crucial role in supporting victims of domestic violence, as the shop provides clothing, furniture, and household essentials to individuals as they transition out of abusive situations.

Despite facing financial hurdles last year, particularly with the Department of Social Development (DSD) withholding crucial funds, Amcare’s unwavering commitment to its mission saw it persevere and continue to offer services without interruption.

“We’ve conquered all odds and have remained steadfast in our service to the community, thanks to the support of generous sponsors, donors, and partners,” Marihet highlighted.

Acknowledging support

As the organisation celebrates its achievements, Amcare is vocal in its gratitude for the diverse group of sponsors that have contributed to its success.

This includes local church organisations, schools, businesses, and individuals who have donated both funds and goods.

The second-hand goods shop has proven especially instrumental in running operational costs, with donated items providing essential resources that help Amcare continue to serve its community.

“We like to extend a loud and heartfelt thank you to the DSD for their continued partnership, despite the financial challenges we faced last year. We’re also incredibly thankful for the many donors of good-quality second-hand items, as these donations are vital in sustaining our operations and ensuring that we can offer support to those in need,” Marihet said.

As the DSD’s current fiscal year draws to a close, Amcare is eagerly awaiting clarity on which services will be funded in the 2025 financial year. This uncertainty looms large, but Amcare remains hopeful and ready to adapt to the new challenges and opportunities that may arise.

A commitment to the future

Looking ahead, Amcare remains steadfast in its mission to empower and uplift vulnerable individuals.

In addition to ongoing social services, Amcare is dedicated to teaching valuable life skills, offering transport for clients who need assistance with appointments, and cultivating its community vegetable garden to provide fresh produce to those in need.

Marihet expressed that their goal has always been to offer hope and support to those who need it most. They are proud of the progress they’ve made, and they look forward to continuing to serve the community for many years to come.

Amcare’s impact over the past 23 years is a testament to the resilience of its staff, the generosity of its supporters, and the enduring strength of the communities it serves.

With a clear focus on the future, Amcare is poised to continue making a difference in the lives of thousands of individuals, providing not only immediate relief but long-term empowerment to those who need it most.
