WATCH: Ekurhuleni hosted an awards ceremony for city’s top performing former matric learners
Top performers are from areas in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan and were part of the group that sat for the 2024 matric examinations.
Senior officials from the City of Ekurhuleni, including Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, gathered at the Dumisani Masilela Theatre to celebrate recent top-performing matriculants from the metro at the Godfrey Pitje Academic Excellence Awards.
Hosted in Germiston on January 28, among the attendees were city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi, MMCs Jongisizwe Dlabathi and Nomadlozi Nkosi, speaker of council Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, and Gauteng MEC of Education Matome Chiloane, and other officials from local and provincial government.
Gauteng’s overall top academic achiever, Musawenkosi Buthelezi, was also among the distinguished guests.
Musawenkosi Buthelezi from Zimisele Secondary, in Springs, Gauteng East, was the top learner in the province, getting a total of 1 721 marks in seven subjects. During his opening remarks, Xhakaza expressed his gratitude towards the Gauteng MEC of Education and his office for their dedication to the province’s education system.
He also applauded top achievers for their ambition and hard work.

“Success is not just about excellence but also progress. We would like to see schools in Ekurhuleni reach a 90%-plus pass rate. Education is the key to unlocking the city’s development and future,” said Xhakaza.
“It is important for this city to pursue skills development in Aerotropolis to drive economic success and to unlock the full potential of the city’s factories. The pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong journey.”
