WATCH: Alberton Police Station honoured as best in SA

The Alberton Police Station was named station of year at the SAPS National Excellence Awards.

The Alberton Police Station hosted a celebration where its members, the CPF, Community in Blue patrollers, the Pastors Forum, NGOs and business forums gathered to form a guard of honour for station commander Colonel Olivein Letloenyane on January 29.

This was a tribute to his leadership and the station’s recent naming as station of the year.

The Durban International Convention Centre in KwaZulu-Natal hosted the awards on January 26.

The Alberton SAPS earned this honour because of its 54.7% reduction in contact crime and a 64.18% increase in police-detected crimes, reflecting the station’s proactive and dedicated approach to policing.

A benchmark for excellence

Letloenyane’s leadership has been instrumental in the station’s success.

He revitalised community structures, improved response times and established a Victim Empowerment Centre to support vulnerable individuals.

Additionally, he fostered team cohesion, professionalism and public trust, setting a benchmark for excellence in policing.

The recognition was part of the Annual National Excellence Awards 2025, honouring over 120 police officers, support personnel, reservists, community policing forums and sports stars who showed extraordinary commitment and dedication throughout the 2024/2025 financial year.

A collective effort

Letloenyane thanked the community, the CPF, patrollers, security companies, business forums and religious organisations for their support.

“What motivated me and made me believe we would bring this award home was you. We didn’t do it alone. We did it all through God,” said Letloenyane.

Among those celebrating the achievement was Laerskool Orion’s head boy, Herman Blom, who attended to congratulate the station.

Verwoerd Park resident Marlene Wilson (78) appreciated the station’s service, “I have lived in Alberton since 1981 and have never had a problem with the station. They have been supportive,” said Wilson.

The event recognised the hard work of the Alberton SAPS and reinforced the strong partnerships between the police and the community, proving that collaboration is key to effective crime prevention and public safety.
