City urges residents to follow borehole application process to ensure compliance

The City of Ekurhuleni encourages residents who want to install borehole on their properties to follow the procedure that aligns with the city's regulations and requirements.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) reminds residents interested in installing boreholes on their properties to adhere to a specific application process to comply with local regulations and promote sustainable water usage.

With the increase in requests for boreholes, the city’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, has stressed the importance of obtaining proper authorisation before drilling can start.

“It is essential for residents to understand that drilling a borehole without proper authorisation can lead to legal repercussions. According to the City’s Water By-Laws, permission is mandatory before any drilling can commence,” Dlamini explained.

The spokesperson clarified the approval process ensures adherence to local laws and supports the responsible management of water resources.

“Groundwater is a public resource under the National Water Act 45, and this process helps to safeguard its sustainable use,” he added.

Property owners must first request an application form.

Residents can get the form by emailing either Mthokozisi Mlotshwa at Mthokozisi.Mlotshwa@ekurhuleni.gov.za or Liziwe Mabulu at Liziwe.Mabulu@ekurhuleni.gov.za

Upon completion, applicants must submit it along with supporting documents, as detailed on the form.

The submitted applications will then go to the city planning department’s dolomite section for review. This section evaluates potential geological or hydrological effects from the borehole.

After the dolomite section review, the application goes to the water demand management section for further consideration. This stage ensures the potential water usage aligns with the city’s sustainability goals.

When the evaluations are complete, applicants will receive a letter informing them of the outcome.

If approved, the final step is for the head of the department to sign off the letter, marking the completion of the formal approval process.

To encourage responsible water use and compliance with regulations, the CoE urges residents to follow all steps in the application process before undertaking any drilling activities.
