The operation, part of Operation Shanela, held throughout the greater Alberton, saw police set up a roadblock where 16 individuals were arrested for drunken driving, nine for being illegal immigrants, and 10 for drug possession.

Four suspects were detained for selling illicit cigarettes, and one person was caught with two rifles and a pistol, highlighting the ongoing issue of illegal firearms in the region.

Overnight, Gauteng detectives arrested 699 suspects, including 134 for crimes against women and children, underscoring the police’s commitment to tackling gender-based violence.

The operation also saw the impounding of a Toyota Quantum with a tampered engine, as well as the closure of six liquor outlets for violating the Liquor Act.

Lieutenant General Mthombeni praised the success of the operation, stressing that the police are dedicated to ensuring public safety and enforcing compliance with the law.

“We will continue to target criminal activity across all sectors to protect our communities,” he said.
