UPDATE: May 6:
City of Ekurhuleni responds to Alberton Cemetery concerns
The City maintains all cemeteries in the region. In recent months we had plenty of rains which delayed our grass cutting programme. However, now that we have entered the winter months residents can expect an escalation of the work on the ground.
A strategy is in place for grass cutting and maintenance and we can confirm that more resources will be deployed to ensuring that the situation improves drastically budgets allowing.
BREAKING NEWS:
The issue of a lack of proper maintenance persists at the Alberton Cemetery, located on George Road in Florentia, Alberton.
The grass is uncut with some of it covering graves, and the weeds are overgrown.
After previous reports on this issue, the Alberton Record was again made aware of no maintenance and overgrown weeds at the cemetery.
When the Record arrived, the journalist found two City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) workers. They were cutting grass and weeds at the entrance and a little stretch of the cemetery’s driveway.
@albertonrecord Alberton Cemetery is in a concerning state. Uncut grass and weeds. #Alberton #Ekurhuleni #CoE
During a walkabout to other parts of the gravesite, there was uncut grass and weeds all over the place. When the record spoke to a regular visitor of the site last year, she said: “It has progressively worsened over the years. I noticed that this year when I visited my dad on Father’s Day, the cemetery was appalling.”
The anonymous source spoke to us again this year. “The graveyard is in a much worse state than it has ever been. Trees have collapsed into graves, and beehives have taken up residence – the situation is just horrifying.
Absolutely nothing has been done.”
The Alberton Record reached out to the Ekurhuleni to ask the city what permanent measures they will put in place. Their comment will be added once received.
