Crimes that affect people who live and work in Alberton the most
The top 10 includes robbery with aggravating circumstances, commercial crime, and drug-related crimes.
The minister of police, Senzo Mchunu, recently released the fourth quarter crime statistics covering a three-month period (January to March, 2025).
Following the release, the Alberton Record decided to take a closer look at crime trends affecting people who live and work in this town.
These crime statistics only reflect cases opened at Alberton SAPS and within its jurisdiction during 2024.
Statistics for 2025 will be released next year.Robbery with aggravating circumstances ranked first, with 490 cases opened.
Commercial crime ranked second with 484 cases, followed by drug-related crimes with 321.
Street robbery ranked fourth with 305 reported cases.
Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles came fifth, also with 305 cases.
Shoplifting was sixth with 279 cases, and common assault followed in seventh place with 263 cases.
The category of trio crimes—carjacking, robbery at residential premises, and robbery at non-residential premises—ranked eighth with 253 cases reported.
Burglary at residential premises and malicious damage to property ranked ninth and tenth, with 202 and 180 cases opened, respectively.
Other crimes included:
• Theft out of or from motor vehicle – 180 cases registered.
• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm -166 cases registered.
• Burglary at non-residential premises – 158 cases registered.
• Carjacking – 124 cases registered.
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs – 112 cases registered.
• Kidnapping – 79 cases registered.
• Robbery at residential premises – 72 cases registered.
• Robbery at non-residential premises – 57 cases registered.
• Common robbery – 50 cases registered.
• Attempted murder – 49 cases registered.
• Truck hijacking – 49 cases registered.
• Rape – 47 cases regis tered.
• Murder – 45 cases registered.
• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition – 36 cases registered.
• Sexual assault – 18 cases registered.
• Robbery of cash in transit – 3 cases registered.
• Contact sexual offences – 3 cases registered.
