WATCH: Community NPOs bring sight and support to Eden Park’s elderly

Senior citizens in Eden Park receive eye care, new glasses, and warm meals thanks to a joint effort by Predestined2Help and Lethukukhanya.

In a heart-warming act of service and solidarity, Predestined2Help and Lethukukhanya, two local NPOs, joined forces to provide essential optical care to elderly residents of Eden Park.

Driven by compassion and commitment, the initiative has already benefited over 60 senior citizens.

Over the past three weeks, volunteers from Predestined2Help personally transported 62 elderly individuals from their homes to Mdluli Optometrist at Sam Ntuli Mall. On June 10, they were assisted in selecting frames and undergoing fittings.

The project was made possible by the generous sponsorship of the South African Life Improvement Charitable Trust (SALICT). Their support enabled the optical screenings and fittings to be carried out free of charge.

Lethukukhanya also played a vital role, supporting its own group of elderly residents with transport and care. In partnership with the ShopRite soup kitchen, the organisation ensured all participants received warm refreshments, a welcome comfort during the winter chill.

“We are truly grateful for the support from Shoprite, our dedicated volunteers, and everyone who helped make this initiative a success,” said Mercia Scheepers, founder of Predestined2Help. “Special thanks go to Rajesh, our benefactor, and to God Almighty for guiding us through this mission.”

Special thanks are extended to Pauline Kammies, a teacher at Eden Park Primary School, who generously offered her vehicle to transport the elders to Mdluli Optometrist for their eye tests over 10 days.

The organisers also praised the elderly participants for their resilience in braving the cold to attend their appointments.
