Children deserve safety: SAPS calls for unity after Child Protection Week event

Kliprivier SAPS, in partnership with Agape Lerato and other key stakeholders, joined forces in Boitumelo Informal Settlement to confront the harsh realities of child abuse.

The Kliprivier SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit marked the end of National Child Protection Week with a powerful community engagement event at Boitumelo Informal Settlement on 6 June.

Running from 11:00 to 13:00, the outreach event carried the theme A Child is Raised by a Community, and was held in collaboration with local stakeholders and the NGO Agape Lerato.

A highlight of the day was a heartfelt message from Lieutenant Colonel LJ Mofokeng, station commander of Kliprivier SAPS, delivered to the crowd in his absence.

He addressed the urgent issues of child abuse and sexual offences, calling them “heinous crimes” that leave lasting trauma.

“Our children are our future, our most vulnerable, and a collective responsibility,” said Mofokeng.

“It is utterly unacceptable that any child in our communities should be subjected to such unspeakable acts.”

Mofokeng urged residents to recognise the warning signs and report any suspicions, assuring that reports can be made anonymously.

He emphasised that the responsibility of protecting children extends beyond law enforcement.

“The fight against child abuse is not solely the responsibility of the police. It requires the active participation and vigilance of every member of our community.”

The event brought together various organisations, including the Departments of Health, Social Development, and Community Safety, as well as NGOs such as Ke Moja Truck, Agape CHBC, and Engaging Parents.

Topics discussed included teenage pregnancy, child neglect, substance abuse, and statutory rape. Free HIV testing and chronic illness screenings were also offered.

The event concluded with the distribution of fruit and water, symbolising collective care and support.

Mofokeng’s final message was a call for unity in protecting children and building safer communities throughout the Kliprivier policing precinct.
