Brackendowns CPF Youth Desk launches with school safety project and Youth Day tribute

With safety, respect and empowerment at its core, the new Brackendowns Youth Desk is giving local learners a voice, and a place in shaping their community.

The Brackendowns CPF has launched a new Youth Desk aimed at building stronger connections between young people and law enforcement.

This initiative is designed to promote safety, education and active community involvement among the youth in the area.

To kick off the project, the Youth Desk partnered with SAPS Social Crime Prevention and Rosemarie’s Prep School for a special safety lesson held on June 13.

During the visit, learners received guidance on essential safety tips and participated in an art activity facilitated by the school.

Selected artworks were handed over to Brackendowns Police Station on June 17 in a symbolic gesture of appreciation and unity to honour Youth Day.

Kim Rousseau, a member of the Brackendowns CPF, said: “The Youth Desk was started to act as a bridge between young people and law enforcement. It is about building relationships, offering guidance and making the police more approachable for our youth.”

She explained that Rosemarie’s Prep was chosen for the project because the school shares the Youth Desk’s vision.

“Much like our Youth Desk, the school is a nurturing space that fosters a positive environment where young people can learn and thrive.”

The safety presentation covered topics such as how and where to seek help, the importance of respecting teachers and adults, the role of the Youth Desk, and the value of law enforcement in the community.

“We believe that young learners should experience as much positive engagement with police as possible,” Rousseau said.

“This helps ensure they feel safe and confident to approach law enforcement when needed.”

The learners responded with enthusiasm and asked many questions.

One topic that sparked meaningful discussion was firearm safety. SAPS officers took the opportunity to explain the dangers and responsibilities surrounding firearms and reinforced that only licensed, trained adults should ever handle them.

“One moment that stood out was when SAPS members noted how the children already knew emergency numbers by heart. Teaching this information early is crucial so children always know what to do in emergencies.”

The Youth Desk handed over the learners’ artwork to Brackendown Police Station on June 17 to celebrate the value and voice of young people in the community.

“By displaying the children’s work, we want to show them they are seen and that their voices matter,” said Rousseau.

Looking ahead, the Youth Desk hopes to grow its membership, encourage greater community engagement and focus on reducing bullying and youth-related crime.

SAPS continues to support the initiative by participating in events and providing training to Youth Desk members.

“There are several new projects currently in the planning stages,” Rousseau added. “As soon as details are confirmed, we will share them across our platforms.”

Schools or young people interested in getting involved with the Youth Desk may contact CPF Chairperson Geoff Steyn on 083 411 1144.
