Beware of distraction theft: Residents share alarming incidents at local shopping centres
Several Alberton residents have reported suspicious encounters in local stores involving distraction tactics. We break down what's happening and how to protect yourself while shopping.
Alberton Record has noted a rise in reports from residents warning of suspicious activity and possible pickpocketing at shopping centres in the area.
These incidents, often shared on social media, involve coordinated distraction tactics targeting shoppers in busy aisles.
In one such case, a shopper described how a woman blocked her way while pretending to reach for an item on a shelf. At the same time, another woman crouched behind her. Moments later, she noticed her handbag had been unzipped. Fortunately, nothing was stolen.
Her post drew numerous comments from others who had similar experiences at malls and centres around Alberton.
These tactics typically involve one person distracting the shopper while an accomplice silently opens handbags or removes valuables from a trolley. Many residents admitted they only realised what had happened after the suspects had disappeared and did not report the incidents immediately.
Simple tips to prevent theft while shopping
• Always keep your handbag zipped and wear it close to the front of your body.
• Avoid placing valuables such as wallets or phones in the open section of a trolley.
• Be cautious of anyone standing too close or blocking your movement unnecessarily.
• Don’t get distracted by someone asking for help while another person approaches.
• If something feels off, trust your instincts and alert store security or management.
• Check your bag frequently after interactions in crowded areas.
