Residents raise safety concerns over missing manhole, drain covers in Alberton
Open manholes and missing drain covers are causing growing safety concerns in Alberton, with residents urging the city to take urgent action.
A growing number of missing manhole and drain covers across streets, roads and walkways in Alberton have sparked alarm among residents, who say the problem poses a serious threat to pedestrians and motorists.
The worst-affected areas are around Voortrekker and Du Plessis roads in New Redruth, near Alberton City.

Pedestrians are at constant risk of falling into uncovered manholes, while motorists could suffer damage to their vehicles if they hit exposed drains.
Beyond safety risks, the infrastructure itself is deteriorating – open drains are more vulnerable to clogging, vandalism and leaks, contributing to water loss and possible pipe bursts.
Dirt accumulation and theft are reportedly worsening the situation.
The city’s Sibusiso Moyo acknowledged the issue.

“We understand the gravity of the situation and are working to rectify the issue. We appeal to residents to report any missing covers to our hotline, and we will ensure the necessary repairs are made.”
Resident Karien Lehman expressed frustration at the municipality’s response, “It’s appalling that the municipality hasn’t taken action sooner. As a pedestrian, I’m constantly on the lookout for open manholes and potholes. It’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt. The municipality must prioritise this.”
