Cabinet minister visits grieving families

While the motive for the killings remains unclear, the incident was deemed serious enough to prompt a visit from Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie.

“I am beyond livid because of the treatment the families received from the police. Statements were taken through the window of a police vehicle because officers were complaining about the cold. The wife of one of the deceased was spoken to rudely,” said McKenzie in a statement.

“I shall take up this matter with the Minister of Police on Wednesday. I have full trust in him. We will no longer allow this kind of treatment of our people. We are no longer orphans of the system. We have a home now that will fight for us all. Justice shall prevail.”

Shortly after the incident, Eden Park ward councillor Dino Peterson posted on social media: “I have no words, ek is gebreek (I am broken). May your souls rest in peace.”

Fellow motorsport enthusiasts, car spinners, friends, family, community leaders, and residents came together to honour Maswaya’s memory.

Speaking at the service, Councillor Peterson supported Minister McKenzie’s calls for car spinning to be formally recognised as a legitimate sport.

“Car spinning is one of the biggest sports today that brings all races together,” he said. “When Minister Gayton McKenzie took office, he often mentioned car spinning. Some people were reluctant to call it a sport, associating it with gangsterism.

“But then you meet someone like Eric, the kindest person, who was an ambassador for what this sport has become.”

The Alberton Record has requested comment from Eden Park SAPS station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Attie Engelbrecht, on the status of the police investigation and will provide updates once received.
