Hoërskool Dinamika Nuclear Science learners visit Koeberg Nuclear Station

Learners from Hoërskool Dinamika explored Africa’s only nuclear reactor and met the experts powering SA’s energy future.

A group of passionate science learners from Hoërskool Dinamika, affectionately known as the ‘Nuclear Namies’, recently had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, Africa’s only working nuclear reactor, just outside Cape Town.

The visit, arranged through an invitation by the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, was a dream come true for the learners, who have shown exceptional interest in nuclear science.

Among the attendees were Ntena Ramoeletsi, Joa van Noordwyk and Morné van Zyl, who were left awestruck by the scale and sophistication of the facility.

Morné said that meeting the incredible team behind Koeberg and seeing first-hand the science that powers a nation was unforgettable.

“We are truly grateful for this opportunity, which was made possible by Marizelle Theron, our nuclear science teacher. It opened our eyes to a world of career possibilities,” he said.

The learners toured the reactor’s visitor centre, where they observed the intricate systems that drive nuclear energy production and engaged with experts about safety protocols, sustainability and future advancements in nuclear technology.

From the visitor deck, the learners gazed out at the powerful turbines and ocean-front setting, reflecting on the role nuclear energy could play in SA’s future.

Unified in their excitement, they all agreed: “Nuclear is the future.”

This visit was part of a broader initiative to spark interest in nuclear sciences among young South Africans and showcase the critical role nuclear energy plays in a cleaner, more reliable energy mix.

As the country grapples with ongoing energy challenges, Koeberg stands as a launchpad for future scientists.

The school said that perhaps, one day, these Nuclear Namies will be among those leading the charge and wished them all well.
