CoE investigates water leaks behind Hendrik Potgieter Street potholes
The CoE has identified water leaks as the likely cause of the potholes on Hendrik Potgieter Street, promising repairs once investigations are complete.
It has been two weeks since the Record visited the worst pothole-affected street in Alberton North, Hendrik Potgieter Street, riddled with so many potholes that it is difficult for drivers to navigate.
There are several small potholes between 5th Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Street, with large and medium-sized ones on 6th Avenue near Hendrik Potgieter Street.
A particularly dangerous large pothole on the corner of 7th Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Street is often filled with water, making it more hazardous for motorists.

After a vehicle trying to avoid a pothole hit a pedestrian, raising safety concerns in the Alberton North community.
The CoE visited the street to inspect the matter, and its Petunia Mdakane explained that water leaks caused the potholes.
“After investigation, we have identified that a water leak beneath the road surface likely causes the potholes. We have escalated the matter to our Water Department to investigate the source of the leak,” she said.
She also assured the public that they would proceed with the necessary repairs to the affected road sections once the water issue was resolved as part of their ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure.
