WATCH: Protestors allegedly torch Home Affairs offices in Germiston
The two-story building on President Street and F H Odendaal in Germiston is on fire.
Protesters in Germiston have allegedly torched the Department of Home Affairs’ Germiston office.
The two-storey building at the corner of President Street and F.H. Odendaal Street in Germiston is still on fire.
According to Ekurhuleni’s emergency spokesperson, William Ntladi, President Street and Jack Street are closed off.
The Department of Home Affairs released a statement: “Home Affairs is collating evidence and will open criminal charges against the anarchists who set a block of flats on fire in Germiston, which then spread to the neighbouring Home Affairs office.”
“It is nothing less than an attack on our social infrastructure and cannot stand,” said Home Affairs.
No injuries have been reported so far.
Buildings in and around the Home Affairs office have also been closed for safety and operational reasons. The scene remains active.
Germiston City News reports that behind the Home Affairs building, people are being evicted by an Ekurhuleni housing company. The sheriff, supported by police and EMPD, is on site.
Deputy sheriff Ijan Kruger from Germiston South told Germiston City News that a court order was granted on June 26.
