In response to residents’ concerns, CoE said: “We take this matter extremely seriously, and therefore all relevant departments are working on resolving it and identifying the source. There was a joint departmental inspection consisting of environmental health – Germiston office, Metro Parks Alberton Depot, Roads and Stormwater with the Alberton Customer Care manager office personnel.

“Work continues in this regard. The city is aware of the offensive odour complaints. Based on past investigations, an offensive smell emanated from the Blesbokspruit wetland situated northeast from the Alberton area and alongside the N3 Highway. We remain resolute in our quest to get to the bottom of this problem,” said the CoE in its statement.

Sahsa Lee said: “I live in Alberton. We drive past the dam daily and I also work in the area. We have been struggling with the odour. We keep the doors and windows closed and don’t open anything. It’s like suffocating and it’s an inconvenience to us daily. So if someone can please get to the problem.”

Bernadine said: “I live in Verwoerdpark Park and work in Alberton North. The smell affects us in our workplace and at home. It comes from Alberton North’s industrial part. We have a drain that passes through our front door at work. The smell was so bad at times that our customers would walk into our office, close the door, and start choking on the fumes. I am asthmatic, and it closes my throat.” Photo: Sylvester Raraza
Ryno Kruger said: “I’ve been living in Alberton for 11 years and I am one street away from Alberton Dam. The odour coming from the dam since February until now goes into our houses and it is horrible. I can’t bring my children here. I can’t visit the takeaway shop across the dam. It’s indescribable how disgusting this is and it’s affecting a lot of us. Ekurhuleni needs help us fix this.” Photo: Sylvester Raraza
Willem Botha said: “I’m a long-time resident of Verwoerdpark. The smell has been terrible and I’m sure that it’s chemicals that have been dumped from the industrial area. This has been reported previously, even to the local councillor. But it just seems as if nothing is being done, as if nothing is being followed up. Something must be done.” Photo: Sylvester Raraza
