WATCH: Meet Lehlogonolo Madila, who is on a mission get Albertonians reading again
Lehlogonolo runs a no-fee reading club from the Alberton Library, free reading books for members and she would like to see its membership grow.
Lehlogonolo Madila, also known as Hloni, a Verwoerdpark resident, is on a mission to get Albertonians reading again. Two years ago, Hloni established a reading club and her goal is to see it grow.
“Growing up, I always loved reading and during a challenging time in my life, I decided to revisit my childhood passion. Reading became my therapy, my refuge. It carried me through my darkest days and that is when I realised that if reading could heal and uplift me, it could do the same for others,” said Hloni. She opened a reading and book club called Reading Redefined.
The no-fee reading club operates from the Alberton Library at the Civic Centre on Alwyn Taljaard Avenue.

Members pay nothing for reading material; they receive free books, which are then discussed during club meetings. Hloni says her main targets for recruitment are high schoolers and young adults in and around the Alberton area.
“I took a deliberate decision to make it absolutely free. The club’s members do not have to buy anything or bring anything special. All they need to bring is their presence and willingness to grow. It is only two hours, but those two hours will truly impact and change their lives,” she said.
