WATCH: Alberton roads flooded again as heavy rain hits town

Raceview and other areas were submerged, and motorists were warned to stay cautious following earlier storms this month.

Barely a month after severe flooding brought parts of Alberton to a standstill, heavy rains have once again soaked the town, leaving roads underwater and drivers caught off-guard.

On November 6, heavy rain caused major disruptions along Hennie Alberts Street in Brackenhurst, extending to Meyersdal, with cars getting stuck in the rising waters.

Yesterday, the rain returned, flooding parts of Alberton once more. This time, the Raceview area, particularly around the Newmarket intersection, was severely affected, leaving vehicles stranded in deep water.

Ward 106 Councillor Tim Denny warned residents and motorists about the dangerous conditions.

“I am at the bottom of Raceview by Timbercity; it is absolutely flooded, more than 40 centimetres here by the Sasol garage and Timbercity. Be very careful. The intersection by Newmarket is also very deep in water,” he said.

The Alberton Record reached out to the Reading Golf Club for comment regarding the flooding but received no response.

The heavy rains follow a warning issued by the South African Weather Service, which predicted the possibility of severe thunderstorms on Saturday, with a 60% chance of rain across Gauteng. The forecast included heavy rain, strong winds, small hail, and the risk of localised flooding.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi reminded residents and motorists to remain vigilant.

“Drivers should exercise caution, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges. Residents in low-lying areas should not attempt to cross river streams during daily activities,” he said.

For any life-threatening emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact the Emergency Services Command and Control Centre at 011 375 5911.

Today, the weather in Gauteng is expected to be partly cloudy, with temperatures ranging between 14°C and 27°C and a 59% chance of rain, according to the latest forecast.
