Plan your festive travel: What Joburg commuters need to know about the new Metrobus system
Metrobus commuters are urged to take note of major changes to the city’s bus payment system, with only the new cashless smart card now accepted.
As the festive season approaches, Johannesburg residents and visitors can expect busier roads, heavier traffic and increased movement across the city.
To avoid congestion and travel stress, Metrobus remains one of the most affordable and convenient ways to get around Joburg.
Commuters are reminded that the old Wayfarer ticketing system has already been phased out, and Metrobus now operates on a new cashless payment system.
Wayfarer system no longer in use
Metrobus has officially discontinued the Wayfarer and the old prepaid card system.
These cards are no longer accepted on Metrobus services, and commuters can no longer use them for travel.
Passengers who have not yet transitioned are advised to do so immediately to avoid travel disruptions during the festive season.
Metrobus now uses a modern, cashless, and contactless system designed to improve efficiency and safety.
Under the new system:
- Cash payments are no longer accepted
- Commuters must use a Metrobus smart card
- Passengers are required to tap in when boarding and tap out when exiting
- Fares are calculated based on distance travelled, not zones
Failing to tap out at the end of a journey may result in a penalty fare.
What happened to the zone-based system?
Metrobus previously operated using a zone-based fare structure, where fares were determined by the number of zones travelled.
This system has now been replaced by distance-based pricing, ensuring commuters pay only for how far they travel.
What commuters should do this festive season
To ensure smooth travel during the holidays, commuters are encouraged to:
- Obtain and use the new Metrobus smart card
- Make sure their card is sufficiently loaded before travelling
- Allow extra time for trips during peak festive periods
- Familiarise themselves with tap-in and tap-out requirements
Metrobus continues to encourage residents and visitors to make use of public transport this festive season as a safe, efficient and cost-effective way to move around the city.
