Prepare for holiday travel with more than just the usual car checks

There are unexpected essentials you should never travel without this festive season.

As families across SA prepare for their annual festive season getaways, many motorists have already done the standard vehicle checks: Tyre pressure, fluid levels, spare wheel condition, lights and wipers.

While these are the foundations of responsible travel, they are not always enough when the unexpected strikes.

Holiday routes can be unpredictable, with remote areas, long stretches between towns and the heightened risk of delays during peak traffic.

Breakdowns and emergencies rarely occur at convenient moments, and being unprepared can quickly escalate a manageable situation into a dangerous one.

This is where a few lesser-known essentials can make a significant difference.

Often-overlooked items that should be part of a motorist’s travel kit this festive season:

• A fully charged power bank and cables

A cellphone with a flat battery is practically useless. A high-capacity power bank ensures you can still make emergency calls, access navigation apps or send location updates during long delays or after unexpected stops;

• Emergency blanket or warm clothing

Even during summer, temperatures can drop sharply overnight, especially in remote and elevated regions. A thermal blanket or spare warm clothing helps prevent heat loss while waiting for help, ensuring comfort and safety for all passengers;

• Water purification tablets or a compact water filter

Water supplies can be limited if you are stranded for a prolonged period. Purification tablets or a portable filter provide a reliable backup, allowing you to safely use available water sources when bottled water runs out;

• Whistle and reflective warning devices

A whistle can draw attention more effectively than your voice, especially if help is nearby but out of sight. Reflective triangles or flares improve your vehicle’s visibility to other motorists, reducing the risk of secondary incidents in poor light or challenging conditions;

• Portable jump starter/battery pack

Traditional jumper cables require another motorist to stop and assist, which is not always guaranteed. A portable jump starter gives you an independent solution to restart a dead battery, particularly valuable when travelling through quiet or isolated areas.

Small extras that make a big difference

Wet wipes, duct tape, a multi-tool and a compact tyre inflator or sealant can help manage minor issues on the spot, preventing further damage and reducing stress during your journey.

With high temperatures, long distances and increased traffic placing additional strain on vehicles, preparation is more important than ever. Thinking beyond the basics ensures peace of mind, improves safety and helps protect your loved ones on the road.
