Alberton’s Clinton and Redruth roads ravaged by potholes

Once marked by a single sinkhole, Clinton and Redruth Roads in Alberton are now dominated by expanding potholes, raising safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians alike.

The corner of Clinton and Redruth Roads in Alberton, next to the old CMH Toyota building, has seen a sharp decline in road quality, with potholes rapidly spreading and causing concern among residents.

The deterioration began with a single open sinkhole, which the municipality patched.

However, the temporary fix has not held, and numerous potholes of varying sizes now dominate the area.

Motorists have reported that navigating these hazards has become increasingly complex, with some forced to swerve onto pavements or take alternative routes to avoid damage to their vehicles.

Residents have expressed concern about the poor and dangerous condition of the roads.

The City of Ekurhuleni pledged R50m last year to the Sivala Ama-Potholes project, an initiative aimed at restoring the safety and functionality of local roads.

The campaign was launched earlier last year on Nelson Mandela Avenue in Alberton by MMC for Roads and Transport Planning, Andile Mngwevu, as part of the Sivala Ama-Pothole Blitz.

Despite the city’s efforts, some roads, including Clinton and Redruth, remain unattended, leaving residents frustrated.

The Alberton Record has contacted the City of Ekurhuleni for comment, and an update will be provided once a response is received.
