A resident of Alberton North reported that on July 10, she, her mother, and her children were walking to a shopping centre when she was hit by a car trying to avoid a pothole.
“As we were crossing 5th Avenue, a car swerved to avoid a pothole and nearly drove onto the pavement. In doing so, the driver struck me with his vehicle,” said Melanie Cecilia du Toit. “I wasn’t seriously injured because it was only his left side mirror that hit my right arm. But if one of my children had been walking on my right side, they could have been hit instead.”
The City of Ekurhuleni has allocated R50 million to the Sivala Ama-Potholes project this year, aimed at restoring the safety and functionality of local roads. On May 15, MMC for Roads and Transport Planning, Andile Mngwevu, launched the initiative on Nelson Mandela Avenue in Alberton as part of the newly introduced Sivala Ama-Pothole Blitz, a comprehensive road maintenance campaign.

To date, some roads in Alberton remain unattended. The Alberton Record has contacted Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the city, for comment. An update will be provided once a response is received.
