Grass cut after months of complaints, but Kromvlei Cemetery left in mess
After waiting almost a year for overgrown grass to bet cut, Alberton residents are now dealing loose piles of cut grass left scattered at Kromvlei Cemetery.
Alberton residents have once again raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of Kromvlei Cemetery, saying ongoing neglect has made it difficult to visit the graves of their loved ones with dignity.
Throughout 2025, residents complained about severely overgrown grass, stating that it became almost impossible to walk to gravesites.
Although municipal workers eventually began cutting the grass in late December, residents say the situation has worsened rather than improved.
After the grass was cut, black plastic bags filled with grass cuttings were left scattered around the cemetery.
These bags have since torn and split, adding to the mess. Residents have also reported empty bottles littered across the grounds.
Community members say they are frustrated by what they describe as a constant battle to get basic municipal services delivered.
“We waited almost 12 months for the grass to be cut, and now we must fight again just to have the waste removed.
“It feels like nothing gets done unless people complain repeatedly,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous.
Karen Theron, a resident with family members buried at the cemetery, expressed her disappointment and sadness over the state of the grounds.

“It is with great sadness that I have to reach out once again regarding the condition of the cemetery in Alberton North. It is an absolute disgrace to see how a once well-maintained site has fallen into ruin.
“Empty beer bottles and piles of old cut grass are left lying around. I am certain that the parks department is paid to clean and maintain these grounds, so why is this not being done?” she said.
She added that the neglect shows a lack of respect for those laid to rest there.
“What would it cost for people to simply do their jobs, but more importantly, to show respect for our loved ones whose final resting place is there? I am ashamed of the condition of my parents’ resting place.”
Ward councillor Ivan Naidoo said he was not aware of the issue, as it had not been formally reported to him.
“Residents just go straight to the newspaper and do not say anything to the councillor.
“In December, I made sure the parks department cleaned the cemetery before Christmas, and they did. I was not aware that piles of grass were left behind,” he said.
Naidoo said he would escalate the matter with the parks department to ensure the cemetery is properly cleaned and maintained.
Residents are calling for regular upkeep of the cemetery and say they want consistent action rather than temporary fixes.
