WATCH: Water leaks from electricity cabinet spark safety fears in Brackenhurst
Residents are questioning delays in fixing a leaking electricity cabinet in Brackenhurst as water continues to run into the street.
A resident in Brackenhurst has voiced concern over what he describes as a lack of assistance from the City of Ekurhuleni after reporting a leaking electricity cabinet at 11 Le Maitre Street.
According to the resident, water has been flowing from the electrical cabinet and running down the street, raising concerns about public safety.
He said the situation is alarming as water and electricity pose a dangerous combination, especially in a residential area.
“This is a big issue, especially as South Africa is facing a water crisis, including areas like Johannesburg.
“To see clean water running into the street like this is worrying,” the resident said.
The resident added that the leak has been ongoing for about ten days since it was first reported to the city.
Alberton Record visited the area on February 3 and confirmed that water was still coming from the electricity cabinet at that time.

He said that on the morning of February 3, officials from the City of Ekurhuleni contacted him regarding the issue he had logged.
However, he believes the contact only came after the matter was escalated to the Alberton Record.
Alberton Record submitted enquiries to the city on February 2 regarding the leaking cabinet; at the time of publication, it had not yet received a response.
The resident further claimed that complaints logged through the city’s app are repeatedly being closed, despite the problem not being resolved.
This, he said, gives the impression that the issue is not being taken seriously.
Adding to his concern, the resident recalled that at one point water was spraying into the air and splashing near the electrical cabinet, worsening fears of possible electrocution or damage to infrastructure.
The resident requested anonymity, citing safety and privacy concerns.
