Young at Hearts celebrate love with music and fellowship

Pensioners gathered for a Valentine’s celebration filled with music, reflection and shared moments at a local church.

The Young at Hearts hosted a Valentine’s celebration for pensioners at the Alberton Methodist Church on February 11.

The presentation by church member Deacon Vernon van Wyk took the attendees on a journey through the life of legendary singer Elvis Aaron Presley.

He shared highlights from Presley’s career, spoke about his life and played some of his popular songs, including Love Me Tender, Heartbreak Hotel and Hound Dog.

Many in the audience sang along and reminisced as the hits filled the room.

The gathering also honoured those who had birthdays and wedding anniversaries in January and February. They received chocolates to mark their milestones.

Adding a fun element to the morning, guests who had found stars on the back of their entry tickets also received chocolates.

The attendees enjoyed snacks and refreshments in between the programme, creating time for conversation and connection.

Esmeralda Lombard from Young at Hearts reminded guests of the deeper meaning behind the celebration.

“Today, we are celebrating love. We’re celebrating Valentine’s Day. One of the verses that always comes to mind for me is John 3:16.

“We sometimes take the verse for granted because it’s something we know so well. I don’t want to downplay the love and greatness God has for us. But, often on Valentine’s Day, some of us get lonely and sad because no one buys us chocolates, and nobody spends time with us.

“A few years ago, I saw the verse rewritten in a different way. It’s the same verse, just rearranged. You can see the word ‘Valentine’ hidden there. It’s a great reminder that no matter who shows love to you on Valentine’s Day and every other day, you have a Saviour who loves you,” she said.

The morning served as a reminder that love can be shared in many ways, through music, fellowship, thoughtful gestures and faith.
