WATCH: Massive chemical factory fire in Germiston South prompts evacuations, explosions reported

Explosions have been reported, and staff is being evacuated as emergency teams assess hazardous chemicals at a Germiston South factory.

Emergency services are responding to a large-scale fire at a chemical factory on Strachan Road in Germiston South, with authorities evacuating residents and workers in the surrounding area due to safety concerns.

William Ntladi, City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson, confirmed that multiple chemical factories are involved in the blaze.

“We are evacuating all personnel and staff within a radius of approximately 500m from the factory,” he said.

Officials are taking precautions as the exact chemicals stored at the site remain unknown, and explosions have already been reported.

Several gas tankers and large chemical trucks are also present on the premises, raising concerns about the volatility of the materials.

“The situation is extremely serious. We are ensuring that everyone in the immediate vicinity is safe until we fully understand the potential hazards,” Ntladi added.
