Community flocks to Alberton for music, food and cook-off

Cooking teams battled it out as Village of Love celebrates community connection.

Jackson Dam in Alberton was filled with music, laughter, and the aroma of home-cooked Indian meals on June 13, as the Village of Love hosted a successful family fun day and cook-off competition that brought the community together.

The event was a fundraiser for the organisation to build an old-age home in Joburg south.

Families spread picnic blankets and camp chairs across the dam’s grounds for a day of entertainment, food, and connection.

The event delivered exactly what was promised: live music and entertainment, delicious food, family fun, and a fiercely contested cook-off.

Only 10 cooking team spots were available, and each team paid R500 to compete for top honours.
Teams went head-to-head with their signature recipes, with prizes up for grabs for the best dishes of the day.

The competition added a competitive edge to the relaxed community vibe, as spectators gathered to sample and cheer on their favourites.

Beyond the cook-off, the day was packed with family-friendly activities that kept children and adults entertained.

Music set the tone throughout the afternoon while food stalls and team kitchens served up a variety of dishes.

Bring your picnic blankets, camp chairs, and good vibes was the call, and residents responded.

The gathering gave community members a chance to connect, share stories, and strengthen community bonds under the Village of Love banner.

Village of Love, which focuses on community upliftment, used the event to create a space for connection and celebration.

The turnout showed strong support for local initiatives that bring people together.
