WATCH: Stepping Stone launches Brick by Brick campaign to build 14-bed in-patient unit

Stepping Stone Hospice has officially launched its Brick by Brick campaign to raise funds for a new 14-bed in-patient unit in Raceview, calling on the Alberton community to help expand compassionate, specialist palliative care for patients facing life-limiting illnesses.

Stepping Stone Hospice has appealed to the Alberton community to help lay the foundation for a larger future with the official launch of its Brick by Brick campaign, an ambitious fundraising drive aimed at building a dedicated 14-bed in-patient unit next to its existing children’s unit in Raceview.

The campaign was launched during a special event which also marked the second anniversary of the hospice’s children’s in-patient unit and honoured the young patients whose lives have touched the organisation.

CEO Tersia Burger said the occasion was both one of remembrance and hope. “Today we are celebrating two years of our baby unit, inpatient unit. We’re remembering our little ones who have passed away, and we’re also launching our Brick by Brick campaign,” she said.

The new development will provide a sanctuary of comfort, dignity and compassionate care for adults facing life-limiting illnesses while also incorporating a training centre to strengthen palliative care services in the area.

Burger said the project belongs to the entire community. “We are building a 14-bed facility on the grounds next door that will house 14 patients and a training centre, and we are appealing to the community for their support. This is not for us as individuals; this is for the community,” she said.

According to the campaign information, the facility represents more than bricks and mortar. It aims to ensure more residents have access to specialised care, pain relief, symptom management and emotional support during life’s most difficult moments.

The Hospice describes the project as a place where patients with life-limiting illnesses can receive home-based care, short-term admission for symptom control and dignified end-of-life care when needed.

The Brick by Brick campaign seeks to raise funds to make the vision a reality. Residents, businesses and organisations are encouraged to get involved by attending campaign events, making donations or supporting fundraising initiatives.
