Alberton Methodist Church Women’s Auxiliary Knit-o-thon spreads warmth for Mandela Month

Alberton Methodist Church Women's Auxiliary marked Mandela Month by spending 67 minutes knitting and crocheting warm items for babies while preparing care bags for hospitals and a temporary place of safety.

Alberton Methodist Church Women’s Auxiliary hosted a Knit-o-thon on July 11, bringing together 30 women for a day of giving back to the community in honour of Mandela Month.

The group spent 67 minutes knitting and crocheting to celebrate the 67 minutes dedicated to the legacy of Nelson Mandela. During the event, members demonstrated the different items that are included in the Mommy Care Bags prepared for Bertha Gxowa Hospital.

The association has already packed 60 care parcels, while another 150 care bags are being prepared for Thelle Mogoerane Hospital.

The items will be delivered to Bertha Gxowa Hospital on 23 July as part of Mandela Month celebrations.

Members also demonstrated how to make baby booties using a knitted square and exchanged knitting and crochet patterns, tips and ideas with one another.

The Women’s Auxiliary thanked the AMC Yarn Sisters, the congregation and the wider community for their generous support and donations, which made the project possible.

The group hopes the handmade items will help keep precious little babies warm, comfortable and surrounded by love.

The day ended on a warm and cheerful note as everyone enjoyed delicious soup and pancakes together after completing the community project.
