Anti-migrant leader, Nkosikhona Ndabandaba (popularly known as Phakelumthakathi), led residents of Palm Ridge, Greenfields, Phola Park, Zonkizizwe, Eden Park and neighbouring communities in an anti-illegal immigration march.

The march, held on July 28, saw the closure of foreign-owned shops. Hundreds gathered to participate in the march while singing traditional songs.

March leaders took it to locations known to be dominated by foreign-owned shops, such as Palm Ridge.

The area is dominated by hardware businesses, wholesalers, and spaza shops owned and operated by foreign nationals.

Businesses in the area closed for the better part of the morning, weary of the looming march and some had shut down their operations the day before the march (July 27).

Visit to slain Greenfields community leader’s home

Ndabandaba took marchers to the home of the slain Greenfields man to show support to the family.

As previously reported by this publication, Andile Somgxada (53), died on July 9 after being shot outside his home days earlier.

Somgxada’s killing is still being investigated. Ndabandaba privately met with the slain man’s family to pass his condolences for their loss.

Ndabandaba was also shown the spot where Somgxada had been shot and heard how he was rushed to Phola Park Clinic in an effort to save his life.

Marchers then took to the streets under the supervision of law enforcement officers, trailing on Palm Ridge’s Teebos Avenue, where many foreign-owned businesses operate. Ndabandaba is expected to lead another march in Mayfair, Johannesburg.
