With less than 100 days remaining before the 2026 local government elections, the Electoral Commission is urging eligible residents across Alberton to make use of the final in-person, station-based voter registration weekend on August 1 and 2.

Registration stations nationwide will be open from 08:00 to 17:00 on both Saturday and Sunday, allowing voters to register for the first time, update their registration details or confirm that their address information is correct.

The Electoral Commission said the weekend is aimed at “all eligible South Africans who have not yet registered as voters, those who are registered but have not yet inspected their address details for completeness, or those who have moved residence since they last registered.”

Residents are reminded that participation in elections begins with registration, allowing citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

A total of 48 212 trained electoral officials will be deployed across the country to assist voters during the registration drive.

The Commission also reminded residents that, unlike national and provincial elections, local government elections require voters to cast their ballot in the voting district where they are registered. It stressed: “Register where you live – vote where you are registered.”

Residents who have moved since their last registration are encouraged to update their residential address to ensure they are allocated to the correct ward.

For those unable to visit a registration station, the Commission’s data-free Online Voter Registration Portal remains available 24 hours a day, allowing voters to register for the first time, check their registration status, confirm their voting station and update contact or address details. The online service will remain available until Proclamation Day.

The Commission noted that more than three million registration transactions were recorded during the first voter registration weekend in June and expressed hope that the same level of public participation will continue during this final registration drive.

To support the process, the Department of Home Affairs will once again align its operating hours with the registration weekend, helping eligible voters who require identity documents.

Residents in the Alberton area can register or update their details at several local voting stations, including:

• Alberton Library Auditorium, 4 Alwyn Taljaard Street, New Redruth (Ward 106).

• Bracken Park Community Hall, 229 Hennie Alberts Street, Albertsdal (Ward 94).

• Tent at Sky City Ground, Cosmopolitan Drive, Palm Ridge Ext 10 (Ward 53).

• Greenfields Community Hall, 193 Sausage Tree Street, Greenfields (Ward 58).

• JD Thomas Hall, 67 Ferrari Street, Eden Park (Ward 57).

As Election Day draws closer, the commission is calling on every eligible South African to “play their part by making use of this last voter registration weekend”, reaffirming its commitment to delivering elections that are “free, fair, transparent and credible.”
