Non-profit organisations (NPOs) in the Alberton area had the opportunity to strengthen their compliance and get guidance on funding applications during an NPO Roadshow at the Alberton Civic Centre on Wednesday.

MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko led the roadshow, which aimed to help NPOs meet compliance requirements and improve their applications.

The roadshow focused on “strengthening compliance, improving applications and building partnerships,” with registered NPOs invited to receive support on funding application requirements, compliance matters and technical guidance.

Nkomo-Ralehoko said the relationship between government and NPOs remained important, but stressed that it had to be based on accountability.

“The relationship with NPOs remains important, but it must be a relationship based on accountability,” she said.

The MEC also emphasised the respective roles and responsibilities of government and NPOs in providing social protection.

“Government has a constitutional and developmental responsibility that it cannot outsource,” she added.

According to Nkomo-Ralehoko, NPOs play an important role as partners in delivering social protection, but do not replace the state.

The partnership also comes with responsibilities for NPOs, including good governance, proper financial management, compliance, credible reporting and demonstrable service to beneficiaries.

The roadshow was intended to provide direct technical support and guidance while strengthening communication and partnerships between NPOs and the department.

Nkomo-Ralehoko encouraged registered NPOs and organisations intending to apply for funding or improve their compliance readiness to attend the sessions in their respective regions.
