The feet washing ceremony at the school symbolises service, respect and caring.
Learners from Alberton’s Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School participated in a feet washing ceremony and blazer handover.

These gestures are also thought to be inspired by Jesus washing his disciples’ feet, to represent the overturning of power dynamics to serve the marginalised and to plead with leaders to end conflict.

“As part of the conclusion of our Grade Eight orientation, the 2025 management team implemented this special gesture of service last year. This humble act emphasises the importance of leadership through service, respect, and caring. This meaningful moment was concluded with the 2026 Council putting on the new Grade Eights school jackets for them,” said the school in a statement.

The blazer handover marked the beginning of a new high school journey to encourage commitment, integrity, and dedication among learners at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen.

“We are proud of our leaders and learners and look forward to seeing them grow as role models who lead with purpose and heart,” the school added.
