Marais Viljoen celebrates wave of international sporting success
Hoërskool Marais Viljoen is celebrating a remarkable period of sporting success after learners earned international selection in athletics and cricket, with the school's athletes set to represent South Africa on some of the biggest stages.
Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School is celebrating an exceptional chapter in its sporting history after several learners earned the opportunity to represent South Africa internationally in athletics and cricket.
Leading the celebrations is Grade 12 learner Ashlynn Norman, who has officially been selected for the final South African team that will compete at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA, this August.
Ashlynn was also selected to represent South Africa at the Meeting de Liège in Belgium on July 15.
Marais Viljoen described her achievements as a reflection of her dedication and talent.
The celebrations did not end there. Marais Viljoen also announced what she described as “history in the making” after recording the highest number of athletes ever selected to represent South Africa internationally at the COSSASA Games in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, from August 31 to September 3.
The four athletes selected are Lize-Mari van den Berg, who will compete in the U17 400m and 800m despite still being a U14 athlete; Janine Berry, who will compete in the U17 long jump; Tyran Brooks, who will contest the U17 1 500m and 3 000m; and Calvin Kandira, who will compete in the U17 400m.
The school congratulated and wished them success as they represent both South Africa and ‘The Blue Machine’ on the international stage.
Marais Viljoen learner Ashleigh van Wyk played her part in the South African U19 women’s cricket team that made history by defeating Pakistan 3-2 in the Youth T20I series in Karachi.
The Junior Proteas sealed the series with a 17-run victory in the fifth and final Youth T20I on July 24, securing South Africa’s first-ever Youth T20I series victory on Pakistani soil.
Ashleigh produced another valuable performance with the ball in the deciding match. She claimed figures of 2/22, while she celebrated outstanding figures of 3/15 in the opening match.
Reflecting on her achievements, the school said: “Your dedication, talent, and commitment continue to inspire us all. We are incredibly proud of your achievements and the way you represent both South Africa and Marais Viljoen on the international stage.”
