Tree roots causing sewage woes

The problem in Hennie Alberts Street Meyersdal occur between Alice Street and Johan van der Merwe street.

I refer to the Alberton RECORD letter of July 5, 2017, “Oozing sewage is a health risk”, written by Grant Bohlmann, and thank him sincerely for explaining the health risks associated with sewage.

The problem in Hennie Alberts Street, Meyersdal, occurs between Alice and Johan van der Merwe streets.

Populus Simonii trees were inadvertently planted on top of the main sewerage pipeline. As the trees grew bigger our nightmare started, with the roots growing into the length of the pipeline, resulting in the main line being blocked. The metro has two options:

  • Cut down the trees and remove the roots.
  • Dig the main sewerage line open and cast a concrete collar around each joint in the pipeline to stop the roots growing into the pipeline.

The residents of Meyersdal who are affected (like myself) hope the metro will adopt a constructive plan of action in the very near future to fix this disastrous situation permanently.
