A big struggle with UIF

Not to mention the long queue I had to stand in on the pavement to get to someone who could not assist me.

I was retrenched on March 31 this year and I have not been paid the retrenchment package yet by my employer. However, on April 12 I went to the Alberton office of the Labour Department to register for UIF. I was turned away because my employer did not fill in the UIF Employer Reference Number on the UIF form. As a tax and UIF payer all my life from 1980 when I started working, I am surprised to have been turned away from the UIF Alberton offices just for a registration number which, I am sure, can be checked for on their system. Why is registering for UIF such a mission when we as employees do not have any option but to pay UIF contributions? When a person goes to register for UIF, it means that they do not have any other option of supporting themselves and urgently need to be assisted. Not to mention the long queue I had to stand in on the pavement to get to someone who could not assist me.
