Resident misses his beautiful town – Alberton

When is someone going to stand up and take full responsibility for the general decay of our roads, electricity supply, water supply and sewer upgrades?

I have been in South Africa for 51 years and most of that time has been spent in Alberton.

I love Alberton and have seen it grow. It’s mainly a beautiful place; however, things are starting to go wrong.

The infrastructure is falling apart, not just the power failures, which are not always cable theft. Many times it seems it’s just overloading. Water is leaking all over, sewage is often seen running into the roads as seen in the RECORD of March 17.

The roads themselves are in disrepair, and the repair jobs that get done are shoddy.

So what used to be one geyser, one sewer connection, one electrical supply is replaced by many more.

This would be fine if the infrastructure was designed to carry this extra burden but it is not. Town planning is giving their blessing to all these developments, it seems, without a single thought of the consequences of the extra loading on the existing system. Is it just the revenue that comes from these that is attractive?

When is someone going to stand up and take full responsibility for the general decay of our roads, electricity supply, water supply and sewer upgrades?

We now have a beautiful hospital being erected, and I wonder how this is going to affect our existing structure. In fact, how will our existing system handle the needs of this new hospital?

One could write a whole lot more about the problems in our city, but suffice to say there are problems and they should be attended to.

Peter Mitchell – Resident.
