WATCH: Former Springboks flanker leads training at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen

Ian MacDonald made his Test debut for the Springboks against New Zealand’s All Blacks on August 15, 1992, at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg.

Former Springboks flanker Ian MacDonald led Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School’s rugby team during their afternoon training on January 27.

MacDonald is a well-known and respected rugby legend.

He took the rugby squad through ball retention tactics, ball presentation, and winning the turnover at rucks, among others.

This training is the rugby team’s attempt to be well-prepared for the 2025 season, with their first match on March 1 against the Vaal Triangle-side Hoërskool Transvalia.

The games will play out at Marais Viljoen’s PJ Myburgh rugby pitch in Alberton.

“We are excited to invite two former Springboks, Deon de Kock and Morne Steyn, to another clinic for our boys on January 31,” said Hans Coetzee, the school’s head of rugby.

MacDonald commanded the players’ respect during the training, with them listening attentively to him, asking questions, and enjoying themselves through the entire session.

MacDonald debuted for Transvaal (now the Golden Lions) in 1990 and played 145 matches for Transvaal during his career.

He was a member of the Transvaal team that won the Currie Cup in 1993.
