Eden Park’s unstoppable runner beats the odds
A Good Samaritan changed long-distance runner Mokete Mokeki’s fortunes, but he still has challenges.
Long-time Eden Park resident Mokete Mokeki (46) has transformed his life through a dedication to long-distance running.
After completing matric in 1998, he moved to Gauteng to look for employment and began working as a petrol attendant at an Engen in Alberton in 2009.
It was there that Mokeki’s passion for running was ignited.
Observing a group of social runners who regularly gathered there before their runs, he was inspired to start his own running journey in 2015, often running to and from work as part of his training.
“I was fascinated by their enthusiasm and dedication. I decided to join them, and it’s been an incredible journey ever since,” Mokeki recalls.
A turning point
A turning point came when a Standard Bank Athletic Club customer recognised his potential and sponsored his running license and gear.
This support allowed him to participate in official races, including 10km, 21km, 32km events, marathons and ultra-marathons.
Achievements and milestones
Mokeki has completed five Comrades Marathons and three Two Oceans Marathons, completing the 2019 event in 04:04:00.
Other achievements include winning back-to-back silver medals at the Comrades Marathon in 2023 and 2024.
Mokeki has performed impressively in other races, including Johannesburg’s Toughest 21km (Pirates Race).
This year, he finished the Pirates Race in 01:27:00, significantly improving his 01:29:00 finish in 2023.
He has also achieved personal bests of 02:58:00 in the 42km marathon and 07:24:00 in the Comrades Marathon.
The power of community support
In 2024, Mokeki joined the LewenSentrum Athletic Club, where chairperson Fran Diesel saw his dedication and talent.

Diesel has since sponsored Mokeki by covering his license renewals and membership fees and committing to paying for his registration in a marathon of his choice.
“Fran’s support has been invaluable. It’s amazing to have someone believe in me and my abilities.”
As Mokeki continues to push himself to new heights, he gears up for the Comrades Marathon in June from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
Future goals and challenges
Mokeki aspires to complete at least 10 Comrades Marathons and 10 Two Oceans Marathons and run in an international marathon.
However, he faces challenges like securing funding for running shoes and supplements and balancing training with work commitments.
“It’s not easy, but I’m determined to push through. I’m grateful for the support of my family, friends and community,” Mokeki says.
A journey of transformation
Running has brought Mokeki accolades and transformed his lifestyle, steering him from bad habits and improving his overall well-being.
“Running has taught me discipline, perseverance and the importance of chasing my dreams,” Mokeki says.
With passion and support from people like Diesel, Mokeki’s journey demonstrates resilience and determination, inspiring many in the running community and beyond.
