Alberton teacher conquers ultra-marathon after injury comeback

After recovering from a serious ankle injury, Oscar von Platen discovers a passion for running and completes the grueling 56km Two Oceans Marathon on his first attempt.

Oscar von Platen, a mathematics HoD at Alberton High School, has transformed his life through marathon running.

After recovering from a debilitating ankle injury, Von Platen took up running as rehabilitation. Little did he know that this would spark a passion that would lead him to conquer one of the toughest marathons in the world.

Von Platen’s running journey has been nothing short of remarkable. He completed numerous marathons, pushing his limits and testing his endurance.

On April 6, he tackled the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town, a 56km ultra-marathon that demands peak physical fitness and mental toughness.

He completed the marathon on his first attempt.

“Even after training my muscles and mind, the marathon was tough. It took a toll on my body. It was a challenge I am proud of overcoming,” said Oscar.

He credits running with not only improving his physical health but also enhancing his mental well-being and discipline.

“The training and actual marathon are different, but I enjoy training with my teams. The marathons are always a great test for me,”

His journey is a testament to the transformative power of sports and the importance of perseverance in overcoming adversity.

“I began training for next year’s Comrades Marathon in July and aim to be ready to take on my biggest challenge yet,” expressed Oscar.

“I thank my family, my mother, for their support. It means everything to me. I also want to thank Alberton High for their support,” he continued.

He has shown that anyone can conquer obstacles and achieve amazing things through determination and hard work. As he continues running and inspiring others, Von Platen’s legacy extends beyond the finish line, motivating others to lace up their running shoes and pursue their passions.
